For concrete and terracotta tile roofs, ridge caps are commonly secured with bedding and pointing. Bedding is the mortar base beneath the cap. When the ridge system is sound, water sheds down the roof as intended. When it fails, water may track beneath tiles or sheets and enter the roof cavity. The leak can then appear some distance away, which is why a stain on the ceiling does not always sit directly below the damaged section.

Ridge capping needs occasional attention as part of normal roof maintenance. A visual check from the ground after major storms is a practical habit. Keep overhanging branches trimmed back, clear gutters so water can drain freely, and act on small signs of movement before they become a roof-cavity leak.

For older tiled roofs, periodic professional inspections can identify failing pointing or bedding before caps become loose. The timing depends on the roof’s age, exposure, material, and repair history. A home exposed to coastal weather or frequent high winds may need closer monitoring than a sheltered property.
